Medicaid Return to Normal Enrollment & The Affordable Care Act  

Beginning April 1, 2023, Virginia returned to pre-pandemic procedures to determine eligibility for Medicaid every year. This means that everyone who enrolls in Medicaid must complete an annual renewal to redetermine eligibility. Current Medicaid enrollees will either receive a notice stating that the state has been able to renew their coverage with information that they already have on file, such as income from receiving SNAP benefits, or enrollees will receive a renewal package that must be returned within 30 days. Anyone who is no longer eligible for Medicaid has two opportunities to enroll in health insurance via the Affordable Care Act as soon as they lose their Medicaid coverage, these are “Special Enrollment Periods.”

  • Special Enrollment Period associated with the return to normal enrollment
